I’ve eaten so many Sloppy Joes in my life, and I never get tired of them. I love the tanginess of the ketchup-based sauce and a little bit of spiciness from the seasoning blend. This Traditional Sloppy Joe recipe hits on all of those same notes can be made in one pan, and comes together in under 25 minutes! My recipe starts with ketchup, has some hot sauce, lots of garlic powder, and smoked paprika, a little bit of brown sugar to cut the acid. A few other seasonings round this perfectly simple dinner out. Serve with your favorite side (tator tots, of course), and enjoy!

1 pound ground beef or turkey

1 small yellow onion, finely diced

1 green pepper, finely diced

1 tablespoon minced garlic

1 1/4 cup ketchup

2 teaspoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons hot sauce

1 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 teaspoons smoked paprika

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 tablespoon whole grain mustard

How do I make these Traditional Sloppy Joes?

 
 
 

Step One: In a pan over medium heat, melt a few tablespoons of butter or heat some olive oil. Then, add in your finely chopped green pepper and yellow onion. Let soften for about 10 minutes, and then add in 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. Season with salt and pepper.

Step Two: Once the veggies are softened, add in 1 pound of ground beef or turkey. Season with salt and pepper and break apart your meat until it’s fully cooked. Be sure to incorporate those veggies!

Step Three: When the meat is cooked, add in your spices. Combine 2 teaspoons brown sugar, 2 teaspoons smoked paprika, 2 teaspoons garlic powder and1 teaspoon onion powder. Stir until meat is fully covered. Season with salt and pepper.

Step Four: Then, mix in 1 1/4 cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons hot sauce, 1 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, and 1 tablespoon whole grain mustard. Let simmer for 10-20 minutes, and add additional seasonings to your tasting.

Step Five: Serve on your favorite bun, and enjoy!
