Creamy Za’atar Hummus
Hummus is the perfect snack. It pairs well with any fresh vegetables, some pretzels or pita chips, or as an addition to any salad or sandwich. This Creamy Za’atar Hummus hits on all the classic hummus notes - lots of lemon juice, olive oil, tahini and garlic. To this recipe, I added some cumin and za’atar for a few more layers of flavor. Make this and have it your refrigerator for a nice addition to anything! Enjoy!
“So, what are we making?”
Hummus is crushed garbanzo beans with lots of spices and seasonings. It can be used as a dip, a spread or even a dish all by itself. garbanzo beans have a hefty and nutty flavor, so it makes for quite the filling snack. We always have a can or two in our pantry, and this is the perfect thing to use them for!
My favorite hummuses are smooth and have lots of garlic. The key to a smooth hummus is either adding lots of liquid to the dish, or softening the garbanzo beans before you use them. To do this, you can boil them in some baking soda before using. Garbanzo beans also have skins on them, which if not removed, can give the hummus a rougher consistency. For this recipe, I’ve opted for the boiling method. Boiling also helps to take the skins off!
Traditional hummus has olive oil, tahini, garlic, lemon juice and some salt. Tahini is a paste made from crushed sesame seeds, which adds some nutty notes into the hummus and also adds to the creaminess. You can add any additional seasonings you’d like to your hummus - for this, I opted for cumin and za’atar for a more earthy flavor. Try roasted red peppers, pine nuts, or even olives!
“What do I need?”
1 can garbanzo beans
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
1/4 cup Tahini
1 lemon - juiced
1/4 teaspoon Cumin
1 teaspoons Za’atar
Salt & Pepper
4 tablespoons Olive Oil
1/2 teaspoon garlic
4-5 tablespoons water
“How do I make this?”
Step One: In a pan, bring a few cups of water, and 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a boil. Once boiling, add in 1 can of drained garbanzo beans. Boil for about 10 minutes, drain and dry.
Step Two: Add the dried garbanzo beans to a food processor. Then, add 1/4 cup Tahini, the juice of one large lemon, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon za’atar, a pinch of salt & pepper, 4 tablespoons Olive Oil, 2 teaspoons garlic, and 4-5 tablespoons water.
Step Three: Blend ingredients together until smooth. Add more seasonings as desired. If your hummus is too thick, add some water or olive oil a little bit at a time. Chill before serving!
